Barrowing guide (in progress)

The barrows brothers were great generals, amazing in combat. Their weapons and armor enchanted with special properties were gifts from a stranger. Unfortunately, this gift came with a price. They died, the stranger casting a powerful spell over them. In present day, you’re able to fight them with just (preferably) a black salamander.

This is a guide on how to do the Barrows Brothers minigame with the black salamander method.

Due to the majorly confusing equipment recommendations I’ve seen, this one is relatively short.

Equipment
Head- Neiteziot/Barrows
Torso- Barrows/Bandos
Legs- Barrows/Bandos
Boots- Dragon/Snakeskin
Weapon- Black Salamander
Shield- None
Quiver- Harralander tar
Ring- Ring of life/Berserk/Warriors/Any ring with bonuses
Gloves- Best RFD gloves you can wear/Dragon
Necklace- Glory/Fury/Strength
Cape- Obsidian/Fire Cape/Skill Cape

Stats
Attack, Magic, and Ranged all have to be at 70 to use a black salamander.
Other then that I recommend
50 construction
70 defence
70 strength
Attack 70 (req)
Magic 70 (req)
Ranged 70 (req)

I do not do more then one chest per trip, so if you would like to do that, replace some food with prayer pots.

Inventory
-SPADE
-Black d-hide chaps
-Black d-hide torso
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A SPADE
-Whip/Dragon Scimitar
-Dragon Dagger (optional if you want to use the special on Karil)
VERY IMPORTANT: SPADE DO NOT FORGET
-Runes for teleporting (explained later)
-Fill the rest up with the best food you can get, at the least lobster. If you want to do more then one trip get some prayer potions too.

Additional set-up

If you want to maximize your barrows efficiency, you should probably do these quests.
-In Search of the Myreque
-Desert Treasure
-You will also want to have 50 construction

You can do barrows without them, but it’s going to be a lot slower.

In Search of the Myreque:
This gives you a shortcut to the barrows. Not as important as Desert Treasure.

Desert Treasure:
The reason you want to do this quest is because you can build a portal to Canifis in your house with it. You will want to have your portal near your alter too. And yes, you’ll want an alter. Otherwise you’ll have to find another one or buy some prayer potions.

Things you’ll want
-Alter
-Portal to Kharyrll (Canifis)

So now you’re all set. You have your equipment and your house all furnished, but how do you get out to the barrows?

DO NOT FORGET SPADE!!!! I’d rather you forget your damn sally then spade, because it’s what most people forget.

Shortcut method (starting from Canifis)
Step 1: If you look behind the bar on the south side of town you’ll see a trapdoor, go in it.

Step 2: Search the back wall of the cellar you are now in until you see the option change. If you click that segment of the wall, you’ll go through it.

Step 3: Run to the end of the hall, and go through the doors.

Step 4: Run south until you see a tree with a bridge on it, and click on the tree. After the animation, keep running south until you see a boat. Clicking on the boat will bring you close to the barrows. Head east across the bridge, then north, then east again until you see an arch. Pass through the arch, and you’re at barrows!

Non-shortcut method
Step 1: Run west of Canifis until you see a fork in the road. Run south-west until you come to the gate.

Step 2: (you might want druid pouches if you’re going this way.) Run through the swamp, south. Keep to the west side of the swamp. Eventually you’ll come on a green, kind of upsidown kelp forest.

Step 3: Follow the road until you come out of the forest, then keep going east until you reach a bridge.

Step 4: Go north across the bridge, then east until you see an arch. Go through the arch and you’ve made it! (Finally)

The Brothers
The order you do the brothers in has no effect on the loot you get. However, it is extremely recommended to do Dharok first. With his special ability you can get hit up to 600. Therefore, always do Dharoks first and use your prayer on him.

One out of six barrows (it’s random and resets every time you open the chest) will give you a message that you’ve found a tunnel and ask if you want to enter it. It’s recommended you say no unless you’ve slayed the other brothers already. I will explain where the tunnel goes later in the guide.

There is another thing you need to know. When you’re in the barrows your prayer will drain. There is no way around this, so it might be good to bring a prayer potion just in case you get Dharok in your tunnel.

To get into a barrow, stand on top and dig with your spade. You will be transported to a tomb. When you click on a coffin, a brother will come out and automatically start attacking you. You will also start losing prayer as soon as you go in the barrow, so make sure you’re ready to fight before you go in.

The order I always slay them in is Dharok, Kharil, Ahrim, Verac, Torag, and Guthans.

Dharok- Use protect from melee on him. Always. His special ability is that the lower his strength gets, the higher he’ll hit. He can hit up to 600 when he is at low health. Use the magic attack style with the salamander.

Karil- Karil is extremely accurate and annoying; he can hit multiple 200’s in a row. Use the rest of your prayer points on protect from ranged. Switch to the whip/ dds for this fight, as he is weak to slash attacks.

Ahrim- Equip your d-hide and salamander. Switch your salamander to the ranged setting. Now you’re ready for Ahrim. Switch to protect from magic if you have any prayer left. He is semi-accurate with his attacks, and is known to hit 200’s.
Verac- Switch your salamander back to the magic attack and put your combat armour back on to get ready for Verac. His special ability is that he has the chance to ignore your armour and prayers and hit you as if you’re wearing nothing. This only happens on occasion however.

Torag- Take care of him with the magic attack, he isn’t very special. He has the highest defence of all the brothers and still hits pretty hard though so don’t underestimate him.

Guthans- His special ability is that he has a chance of whatever damage he delt on you back to his health. For example, if he hits a 239 and you see a vortex above your head, he has just added 239 points back to his constitution. This can be very annoying.

Wow! You’ve slayed all the brothers…well five of them anyways, there’s still that mysterious tunnel to explore.

Tunnel
Every time you open the door you have a chance of the brother that you didn’t kill to appear and start attacking you. If this is Karil or Dharok then it can be troublesome. This is why it’s advised to bring a spare prayer potion.

There’s a meter in the bottom right hand corner of the screen that will show you how many monsters you’ve killed. This will affect how much misc loot you get from the chest, but will not affect your chance of getting a barrows item.

When you enter the tunnel you will be surrounded by doors. Only one of the doors will give you the option to open it. There are eight chambers surrounding the chest chamber. There are also four tunnels connecting two rooms.

There are four doors to the chest chamber but only one door is available for you to open. These doors are called puzzle doors. When you try and open them they will present you with a puzzle. The puzzle screen will exit if you are being attacked by anything, so it can be very hard to get the puzzle as creatures in the tomb will try and attack you constantly.

When you get to the chest you can open it or go back and get a higher kill count for better runes or more chance of getting a d med or key half. If you did not encounter the remaining brother in the tomb then he will attack you.

Loot depends on how many monsters you killed. Barrows items occur on average every 1 in 15 chests. This is not set in stone obviously; there have been extreme dry streaks and also times where you can get 2 or 3 items. Your chances of getting a visage are probably higher though, so I wouldn’t bet on it.

Thanks for reading!
